Nebraska Wesleyan’s men and women both advanced to the championship game of their respective Division III Independent tournaments held on Friday night. The NWU women upset top-seeded Chapman University 91-67 in Colorado Springs, while the men defeated the University of California-Santa Cruz on its home floor 67-62.
Senior Angie Schlecht scored a career-high 33 points on 12-for-18 shooting from the field to lead four players in double-figures for the Prairie Wolves. Senior Christine Johnson scored 13 points and pulled down a game-high 8 rebounds, while junior point guard Samantha Porter added 11 points to go with 9 assists. Sophomore Sarah Sedlak chipped in with 10 points and 5 boards. NWU’s opponent on Saturday will be the host school, Colorado College, a team NWU defeated 74-68 in the same arena back on Nov. 20.
In the men’s game, senior M.J. Hrabik scored a career-high 23 points, including 6-for-9 from beyond the three-point arc. Senior forward Andrew Heckman added 17 points to go with a team-high 6 rebounds and 3 steals. The win completed a season sweep against the Banana Slugs. NWU defeated them 75-71 in the Snyder Classic on Nov. 25. The Prairie Wolves shot 54 percent from the field on Friday and improved to 10-16 (7-1 against NCAA Div. III in-region foes) heading into today’s championship game against Chapman University (19-7).
