17th-ranked Concordia University held Nebraska Wesleyan to just 31.1 percent shooting from the floor and the Prairie Wolves made just 9-21 free throws as the Bulldogs won a defensive battle, 47-40, in an energy filled Snyder Arena on Wednesday night (Dec. 10).
The Bulldogs remain on top of the GPAC standings with a perfect 4-0 record and the Prairie Wolves fall to 2-2 in the GPAC and 6-2 overall.
Concordia never trailed the game, but the largest lead of the contest was just seven points. Neither team could get their offense on track as the game was played at an extremely physical level.
NWU trailed 31-27 at halftime, and then the two teams combined for just 29 points in the final 20 minutes. The Prairie Wolves scored just 13 second half points shooting 4-21 from the floor, including 0-7 from 3-point range.
A key moment of the second half came at the 5:24 mark when the Bulldogs stole a pass and Sam Huebner slammed home a dunk and was fouled to put Concordia up by 7 at 41-34. NWU would pull within three points at 43-40 when Dylan Aylward hit a jumper with 1:45 to play, but the Prairie Wolves would be held scoreless the rest of the game.
Tyler Bredehoeft led all scorers for Concordia with 15 points, while Dusan Veselinovic added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Aylward was the only NWU player to reach double figures with 12 points.
Nebraska Wesleyan will look to end the current two-game losing streak when they travel to Indianola, Iowa on Saturday to play Simpson College. It will be the final game for NWU before the Christmas Break.
