Brandon Arp missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer as 15th-ranked Morningside College held off Nebraska Wesleyan, 67-64, in Great Plains Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 31) at Snyder Arena in Lincoln.

The Mustangs (18-6, 10-3 GPAC) had Seth Atkins go 1-2 from the free throw line with four seconds to play to give NWU a shot to tie the game. Jake Spurgeon grabbed the rebound and threw a long pass down to Arp who's deep 3-point attempt was off to seal the win for the Mustangs.

Morningside led 31-25 at halftime, and built the lead up to eight points. NWU took their first lead of the second half at the 9:12 mark when Spurgeon hit a 3-pointer to put NWU up 49-47. Morningside came back to tie the game, and the Prairie Wolves never led again.

Spurgeon hit a pair of free throws with 44 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 63-62. Atkins went 1-2 from the line to put Morningside up 64-62 with just over 30 seconds to play.

On the ensuing possession, the Prairie Wolves had a costly turnover to give the Mustangs the ball. Brady Helmink went 2-2 from the foul line to put the Mustangs up by four. Nick Dinan came down to make a quick lay-up to cut the lead to two points and set up the final possesion.

The Prairie Wolves struggled shooting from outside, not making a 3-point attempt in the first half and finishing the game 2-15 from beyond the arc.

Spurgeon just missed a double-double to lead NWU with 13 points and nine rebounds. Dylan Aylward and Preston Englund each had 11 points.

Morningside shot 48.8 percent from the floor and went 6-13 from 3-point range. Atkins led Morningside with 17 points, while Nick Thompson and Mitch Carstens each scord 15.
