The Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak and picked up their first win since Jan. 10, when they defeated rival Concordia University, 66-59, on Wednesday night (Feb. 11) in Great Plains Athletic Conference men's basketball action.
The Prairie Wolves improve to 9-13 overall and 5-10 in the GPAC after winning for the fourth straight time at Concordia. NWU will end with a four-game winning streak in the "Doghouse" as the Bulldogs will open a new arena next season.
It was another defensive struggle between two of the top defensive teams in the GPAC. The game was tied eight times with seven lead changes throughout the game.
Concordia (18-8, 10-5) led by one point at halftime, 29-28. Dylan Aylward hit a basket to start the second half for the Prairie Wolves and NWU would never trail the game again.
The Prairie Wolves didn't lead by more than six points until under one minute to play, but they never allowed the Bulldogs to take the lead.
It was rebounding and free throws that were the key for the Prairie Wolves success. NWU dominated the glass pulling down 49 boards compared to just 34 for Concordia. NWU also had 13 offensive rebounds.
At the free throw line, NWU outscored the Bulldogs by 12 points, going 26-34 from the charity stripe compared to 14-25 shooting for Concordia.
Dylan Aylward led NWU with 19 points, while Ryan Thramer chipped in 15 points with two 3-pointers. Brandon Arp led a balanced rebounding effort with eight rebounds, as six different players had at least six rebounds.
Tyler Bredehoeft and Ryan Shrum both scored 12 points to pace Concordia.
The Prairie Wolves will now close out the regular season with three straight home GPAC games beginning on Saturday when they host the University of Sioux Falls at 4 pm in Snyder Arena.
