Cold Shooting Dooms NWU Men in Season Finale

February 21, 2009

Nebraska Wesleyan shot just 30.6 percent from the field for the game as they never could get their offense on track as Hastings College defeated the Prairie Wolves, 65-54, in the season finale for the 2008-09 season.

Nebraska Wesleyan finished the season with a 10-15 overall record and a 6-12 mark in the GPAC.

The Broncos (16-14, 11-7) led 26-23 at halftime, and NWU cut into the lead to trim it down to a 31-30 game with 12:37 to play. Hastings then went on a 23-5 run over the next seven minutes to pull away.

NWU cut the lead to eight points and had a chance to get closer in the final two minutes, but the Prairie Wolves attempt at an alley-oop dunk failed and Hastings extended the lead back to double digits.

Neither team shot the ball well as Hastings shot 39.0 percent from the floor and 58.3 percent from the free throw line (14-24), while NWU was just 10-21 from the charity stripe.

The only Prairie Wolf to reach double figures was Ryan Thramer who just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Brandon Arp finished his career on Saturday with seven points and four rebounds.

Hastings was led by Derrik Spooner and Derek Fletcher who both scored 14 points.
