Bryce Arp was fouled with 1.9 seconds left and went to the free throw line with Nebraska Wesleyan trailing by two points, but he missed the front end of a 1-1 and Midland held on for a 61-59 victory in a GPAC men's basketball game on Wednesday night (Jan. 5) in Fremont, Neb.

Midland (5-13, 1-5 GPAC) broke a tied game with 8.7 seconds left as Zach Rosenboom hit a 10-foot jump shot from the baseline.

It was an exciting final two minutes of the game between the old conference rivals. With the game tied, a foul was called on NWU's Nick Dinan then a technical was called on the NWU bench to send Marcus Messersmith four free throws. He converted all four to give the Warriors the lead.

Arp then hit two free throws and Jonah Bradley got an offensive putback to tie the game at 59-59 for NWU.

After Rosenboom hit the eventual game-winner, NWU set up a play to go inside to Arp. He was open early, but then fouled on the floor to set up the 1-1. Having hit eight straight free throws, he came up short and the buzzer sounded.

It was a valiant effort just for the Prairie Wolves to climb back into the game as they fell behind by 13 points in the second half. NWU led by four late in the first half but didn't score in the final four minutes as Midland would go on a 17-2 run.

The inside tandem of Trevor Johnson and Jim Lance keyed the run as they scored nine points during the run.

NWU was led by Arp who was 9-11 at the line for 13 points. Eric Jackson was the only other NWU player in double figures with 11 points to go along with six rebounds.

Midland was led by Messersmith with 20 points.
