It will be championship weekend this May 3-5 as four Nebraska Wesleyan teams will battle for Great Plains Athletic Conference championships. NWU will play host to two different GPAC Championships as they host the Baseball Championships at Haymarket Park/Sherman Field (May 3-5) and the Outdoor Track & Field Championships on campus at Woody Greeno Track (May 4-5). The GPAC tennis championships will be held in Fremont, Neb.
The Prairie Wolves baseball team is the No. 3 seed for the GPAC Baseball Championships and will open play on Thursday morning (May 3) as they face the No. 6 seed Concordia University Bulldogs at 11:30 am at Sherman Field. NWU is 2-1 against Concordia already this season as the two teams just played last weekend with each team winning one game. If NWU wins they will play a winner’s bracket game at 6:00 pm on Thursday at Haymarket Park, while if they lose they will be in an elimination game on Thursday night at 8:30 pm at Haymarket Park. The winner of the GPAC Baseball Tournament receives an automatic bid to the NAIA National Baseball Tournament.
Both the Nebraska Wesleyan men’s and women’s tennis teams will be in Fremont for the GPAC Tennis Championships. The Prairie Wolves women, who were GPAC regular season champions, are the No. 1 seed for the women’s tournament and receive a first round bye. NWU will play the winner of #4 Hastings/#5 Concordia at 4:30 pm on Friday in the semifinal match. The finals will be Saturday morning at 10:00 am. The NWU men are the No. 5 seed and face No. 4 Concordia at 9:00 am on Friday. Concordia defeated NWU, 6-3, the first time the two teams met.
TRACK & FIELD
The 2012 GPAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will kick off on Friday as the multi-events begin at 1:00 pm. All other events will take place on Saturday as field events begin at 11:30 with running events to start at Noon. All 11 GPAC teams will be participating in the outdoor track & field championships on the new Woody Greeno Track at Abel Stadium on the NWU campus.
