Kory Kahlandt scored on a 13-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and that is all Nebraska Wesleyan would need as the defense held Hastings College in check in a 7-3 victory in GPAC football action on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18) at Lloyd Wilson Field for Hastings' homecoming game in front of 2,000 fans.
The victory was the third straight for the Prairie Wolves as they now have evened their record at 3-3 for the season. Hastings drops their second straight game to fall to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in the GPAC.
Neither offense was able to get on track on Saturday as the Prairie Wolf defense held Hastings to only 252 yards of total offense, but NWU managed just 182 yards of their own.
NWU did control the ball in the first half holding the ball for nearly 17 minutes and putting up 133 yards of total offense. The Prairie Wolves got on the board early in the second quarter when Kahlandt scored ona 13 yard run at the 12:18 mark in the quarter capping a nine play, 60 yard drive. That would prove to be the only touchdown of the game.
The Prairie Wolves had just 49 total yards in the second half, but the defense kept them in the game.
The only scoring for Hastings came late in the third quarter when Gavin Rodriquez hit a 47-yard field goal with 44 seconds left in the third. NWU attempted a field goal with 1:18 to play in the game, but it was blocked.
The Broncos did threaten several times but were often hurt by penalties as they had 12 penalties for 96 yards. Hastings tried to mount one final drive late in the game and got down to the NWU 42 yard line, but quarterback Dayton Edwards mistakenly spiked the ball on 4th down.
Matt Hagge had a solid game at quarterback for NWU completing 13-17 passes for 103 yards with one interception. Ben Iske and Charlie Nichols each had three receptions.
On the ground, Jordan Stutzman had 43 yards on 14 carries and Kahlandt rushed for 35 yards with a TD on seven carries.
Paul Seger and Phil Schroer each had eight total tackles with two pass breakups, while Tony Terp had six solo stops.
Edwards was 21-41 for 176 yards for Hastings, hooking up with Maurice Mansfield six times for 49 yards. Nick Grummert led the ground attack with 39 yards on 12 carries.
The Prairie Wolves return home to Abel Stadium next Saturday to try to get over the .500 mark when they host Concordia University at 1 pm.
