Jordan Stutzman scored two touchdowns to set a new NWU career rushing touchdowns record and Phil Schroer intercepted two passes to set a new GPAC record as Nebraska Wesleyan shutout rival Doane, 23-0, on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 8) at Abel Stadium in Lincoln.
NWU has now won six straight games to improve their overall record to 6-3, while Doane falls to 3-7. The Prairie Wolves now even the all-time series at 44-44-6 in a series that began in 1896.
Stutzman led the NWU offense with 105 rushing yards on 19 carries, and he got NWU the early lead. The senior from Friend, Neb., scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter to put NWU up 7-0 after one quarter. His second touchdown came at the 13:45 mark in in the second quarter when be broke loose on the outside to score from 23 yards out.
The other score of the first half was a 20-yard field goal by Zach Egger with 6:32 to play.
Neither team's offense was able to score in the entire second half. The only score for NWU was a 48-yard interception return by Phil Schroer for a TD. It was Schroer's second pick of the day and his 23rd of his career. He set a new GPAC career record with his 23 interceptions.
The NWU defense posted its third shutout of the season and has allowed just 27 points in the six victories. The Prairie Wolves held Doane to 153 yards of total offense and only allowed the Tigers to convert 1-13 third down conversions.
Matt Hagge finished 10-21 for 122 yards through the air for NWU with Stutzman leading the way with four receptions for 27 yards. Kory Kahlandt also added 49 rushing yards on the day.
NWU recorded four sacks and broke up seven passes on the day.
For Doane, Randall Reese led the Tigers with 35 rushing yards on 13 carries. JR Artozqui was 7-19 passing for 64 yards with two interceptions after taking over the quarterback duties in the second half. Starter Anthony Dunn was 3-8 for 16 yards with an interception.
Nebraska Wesleyan will close out its 2008 regular season next Saturday (Nov. 15) with a game at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa.
