Three NWU Players Named 1st-Team All-Independent in Baseball

Three Nebraska Wesleyan baseball players were named to the Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) 2012 First-Team All-Independent baseball team that was announced on Thursday (May 17). Five other NWU players were named Second-Team AD3I All-Independent. In addition, NWU outfielder Alex Heideman was named the AD3I Player-of-the-Year.Alex Heideman

Joining Heideman on the All-Independent First-Team were first baseman Beau Kelly and pitcher Josh Ostrom. Ostrom also earned Second-Team honors as a shortstop. Others on the second team were pitchers Justin Van Dyke and Matt Schommer, second baseman Griffin DePriest and catcher Tanner Lewis.

Heideman (Lincoln, Neb.) led NWU with in seven different offensive statistical categories. He batted .391 with 45 runs scored, seven triples and 17 stolen bases. He set school records in both runs and triples. For the season he slugged .711 with an on-base percentage of .503.

Kelly (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earns his second All-AD3I recognition after earning Second-Team in 2011. He was second on the team with a .385 batting average with nine doubles, three home runs and 27 RBI.

Ostrom (Fremont, Neb.) is a four-time All-Independent recipient. He was First-Team All-Independent at shortstop in 2011 and Second-Team in 2010 and 2011. Ostrom was also the AD3I Co-Rookie-of-the-Year in 2009. As a senior, Ostrom went 6-4 on the mound with a 2.29 ERA. He had seven complete games on the mound and led the team with 38 strikeouts while walking just 10. He ends his career as the NWU career leader in games played.

Nebraska Wesleyan finished the 2012 season with a 20-22 overall record.
