April 28, 2012

Nebraska Wesleyan ended the 2012 regular season with a split at Concordia University in GPAC baseball action on Saturday (Apr. 28) in Seward, Neb. The Bulldogs won an extra innings thriller 5-4, then NWU bounced back to take game two, 5-2.

The Prairie Wolves finished the regular season with a 18-20 overall record and a 12-8 mark in the GPAC. NWU finished third in the league standings and will have the No. 3 seed in the GPAC Tournament.

Trailing by two runs, the Prairie Wolves tied the game in the top of the seventh. Beau Kelly drove in Zach Munford who walked to start the inning. With the bases loaded, Jordan Watteyne walked to score Alex Heideman.

Concordia threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh but Anthony Flores was put out at home as he attempted to score on a wild pitch.

NWU looked to be in great position to start the eighth as Tanner Lewis and Munford were both hit by a pitch to start the inning with the middle of the lineup coming to bat. Heideman then grounded into a double play and Josh Ostrom grounded out to end the threat.

With two outs in the bottom of the 8th, Zac Goodrich singled then an error put runners on first and second. Kyle Ivanoff then singled to plate Goodrich with the winner.

Heideman went 2-4 to lead NWU at the plate. Mike Lovgren took the loss as he entered to pitch the 8th. Levi Clifton started the game and went four innings allowing four runs.

In game two, the Prairie Wolves took advantage of two Concordia errors to score four runs in the third. Ostrom had an RBI single, while Lewis and Munford both had sac flies.

That would be all the NWU would need as Josh Ostrom got the complete game victory on the mound to improve to 5-4. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits.

Beau Kelly was 3-3, while Chris Johnson was 2-3 to lead the NWU offense.

NWU now awaits the official tournament pairings for the GPAC Tournament May 3-5 in Lincoln
