Van Dyke Shuts Down Midland Bats in 4-0 Win

Justin Van Dyke threw a complete game three-hit shutout to lead Nebraska Wesleyan to a 4-0 victory over Midland University in game two of a GPAC doubleheader on Thursday afternoon (Apr. 26) at Moller Field in Fremont, Neb. Midland won the first game of the day in a 3-0 shutout.

With the split, NWU improves to 17-19, 11-7 GPAC and remains in third place in the GPAC standings.

Van Dyke (3-3) had just one 1-2-3 inning and that was the bottom of the 7th inning. He allowed just three hits, with five strikeouts while walking five. NWU helped his cause by turning two double plays and stranding eight runners on base.

Meanwhile, NWU knocked out the Midland starting pitcher after just 2/3 of an inning. The Prairie Wolves scored two runs in the top of the first as Beau Kelly hit a 2-run single.

Neither team scored the rest of the way until the Prairie Wolves added two runs in the top of the seventh. Tanner Lewis and John Kingston both walked then Jordan Watteyne hit a 2-run single through the left side to give NWU the 4-0 lead.

The Prairie Wolves managed just three hits in the first game as the Warriors starter Tyler Brungardt pitched the shutout.

Midland scored two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth for their three runs.

Matt Schommer took the loss allowing two earned runs and seven hits in five inning.

NWU will close out their season this Saturday with a trip to Concordia for a doubleheader with the Bulldogs.
