Lancers Take Two from Prairie Wolves

Mount Marty used a 9th inning single to left field to earn a 8-7 extra innnings victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in game two of GPAC baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 22) at Riverside Field in Yankton, S.D. The Lancers shoutout NWU, 8-0, in game one.

With the losses, the Prairie Wolves fall to 16-18 overall and 10-6 in the GPAC while the Lancers improve to 19-24, 8-8 GPAC.

NWU recorded just three total hits in the first game as the Lancer pitcher Cassidy Kay-Darlington tossed a shutout.

The Lancers pounded out 12 hits as they pulled away for the 8-0 win.

Mount Marty also got ahead early in the second game as they built up a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

NWU answered back as they tied the game in the third inning. Two singles and back-to-back hit batters plated one run, then another scored on a wild pitch.

After Mount Marty took the lead on solo home run by Jason Schmidt, NWU exploded for four runs in the fourth.

Alex Heideman had an RBI single and Josh Ostrom drove in two runs with a single. Beau Kelly then hit an RBI single as NWU still had no outs.

However, a botched suicide squeeze play ended with a strike out, caught stealing to end the threats.

NWU did not score the rest of the way.

Leading, 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Mount Marty's first batter reached on an error. He would eventually score on a single by Schmidt to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

Neither team scored in the 8th inning and NWU was held scoreless in the 9th.

In the home half of the 9th, Mathias Godsil hit a lead off double. The next batter Derik Nelson singled to left field and the ball went through the legs of the outfielder to allow the winning run to score.

Ostrom took the loss going all 9 innings allowing four earned runs on 12 hits.
