Prairie Wolves Get 7-6 Win to Salvage Split with Hastings

April 6, 2012

A long day of baseball ended well for Nebraska Wesleyan as Josh Ostrom came in to strike out the final two batters to give the Prairie Wolves a 7-6 victory over Hastings College in game two of a GPAC doubleheader on Friday (Apr. 6) at NWU Field in Lincoln.

Game one was a marathon game that Hastings won 9-7 in 12 innings.

In the opening game both teams had hot bats to start the game as the game was tied 7-7 after four innings. From there, neither team scored until the 12th.

The Prairie Wolves had plenty of opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on scoring chances. The biggest threat came in the bottom of the 10th inning. Griffin DePriest and Tanner Lewis both singled then Alex Heideman was intentionally walked. Josh Ostrom came up with the bases loaded but flew out to left field on the first pitch.

In the top of the 12th, the Broncos singled to start the inning then got another runner as an error occurred on the sacrifice bunt. Another sacrifice put runners at second and third. Mike Tomlin got the game winning single followed by another RBI single by Connor Thomas.

Alex Heideman led NWU at the plate going 4-5 with three RBI needing just a HR to complete the cycle.

In the nightcap, the Prairie Wolves built up a 7-3 lead after five innings then held off a late rally.

Down 7-5 heading into the seventh, Hastings led off the inning with a double, then John Rivera drove in a run on a single to put the tying run on first. A walk put the go-ahead run on first base.

Ostrom then came in from shortstop as a relief pitcher and struck out Thomas then got Mack Land looking to end the game.

Mike Lovgren got the win for NWU going 5.0 innings allowing five earned runs. Heideman, JJ Thaut and Tyler Vrba all had two hits for the Prairie Wolves.

NWU will be right back home for a doubleheader against Doane on Saturday at 1pm.
