Ostrom Pitches NWU to Victory

Josh Ostrom threw a complete game shutout striking out five as Nebraska Wesleyan defeated Briar Cliff, 5-0, in game two of a GPAC baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 1) at NWU Field in Lincoln. The Chargers won the first game over the Prairie Wolves, 13-5.

Ostrom (1-3) was in complete control the entire way as he scattered six hits and did not walk a batter. The main threat for the Chargers was in the third inning as the first two batters reached base. Ostrom then picked off the runner at second base and kept BCU scoreless.

NWU took advantage of three Briar Cliff errors to score their five runs. Just one of the five Prairie Wolves runs were earned on Charger starter Nathanael Olson. NWU scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Beau Kelly led off the inning with a double, Ostrom had a two-run single to highlight the inning. The other NWU run was a solo home run by Kelly in the sixth inning.

In the opening game, Briar Cliff used two big innings to pull away. The Chargers scored six runs in the fourth and four in the sixth to pull away.

NWU led 1-0 and the game was tied 2-2 after three innings before the big fourth inning.

Five BCU players had at least two hits as they knocked out NWU starter Levi Clifton in the fourth inning. Clifton allowed six earned runs in 3 2/3 on six hits.

At the plate, Pete Sitorius led the way for NWU going 3-4, while Kelly was 3-3. Ostrom had two RBI.
