York College hammered out five home runs and 21 total hits as the 22nd-ranked Panthers defeated Nebraska Wesleyan, 21-3, in the 2012 home opener for the Prairie Wolves baseball team on Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 6) at NWU Field in Lincoln.
Josh Nuyten went 4-5 with two home runs and nine RBI to lead York College who improved to 5-7 overall. Nuyten had a grand slam in the sixth inning and a two-run home run in the seventh.
NWU actually took a 2-0 lead after the first two innings. In the first inning, Griffin DePriest walked and moved to second on a single by Alex Heideman. DePriest then advanced to third on a fly ball by Josh Ostrom and scored on a throwing error by the catcher on a failed pick off.
In the second inning, Beau Kelly led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to put NWU up 2-0.
York College finally got to NWU starter Levi Clifton in the third as they had four straight hits to open the inning and went ahead 4-0. The Panthers scored in every inning the rest of the way with six runs each in the sixth and seventh as the game ended due to the run rule.
Besides Nuyten's big day, Pat Burford was 3-6 with a home run and three RBI for the Panthers.
NWU managed six hits led by Pete Sitorius who went 2-3 with a double.
