Rust, Nixon Receive Player-of-the-Week Honors

Nebraska Wesleyan University athletes swept the Association of Division III Independent's (AD3I) weekly awards for the week of March 31-April 6. John Rust was named the baseball Player-of-the-Week, while Klancy Nixon was the softball Player-of-the-Week. In addition, both Rust and Nixon were also named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Players-of-the-Week. Rust also was named the NAIA Region III Player-of-the-Week.

John RustRust, a sophomore from Lincoln, Neb., hit four home runs and had 12 RBI on the week to lead NWU to a 5-1 record. In a win versus Hastings, Rust was 3-for-4 with two homers and five RBI. He has hit a home run in three straight games and has now extended his hitting streak to 10 games. For the week, Rust had a slugging percentage of 1.095. He was 10-of-21 (.476) with a double, four home runs and 12 RBI in six games.

Klancy NixonNixon, a senior from Norfolk, Neb., was named the MVP of the Grinnell College Tournament as she led the Prairie Wolves to a 3-1 record and the tournament title. She was 7-of-14 in the tournament with two home runs, a triple and five RBI. She helped NWU defeat NCAA Div. III No. 15 Washington (Mo.), 3-2, in the championship game. Earlier in the week, Nixon had the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the 11th inning as Wesleyan defeated Concordia (Neb.), 7-6, in 11 innings. She finished the week with 13 hits, two triples and two homers, while batting .448 (13-of-29). NWU went 6-2 on the week.
