Freshman Josh Ostrom had a huge debut for Nebraska Wesleyan going 5-6 with two home runs and a double to lead NWU to a nonconference slugfest 17-11 victory over Concordia University in the 2009 season opener on Thursday (Mar. 4) at Sherman Field in Lincoln.
NWU jumped out to an early 9-0 lead after scoring seven runs in the second inning and held on for the six-run victory.
The two teams combined for 36 hits with 20 for NWU and 16 for Concordia. There were nine doubles, a triple and four home runs.
Ostrom (Fremont, Neb.) led a very balanced Prairie Wolves offensive attack with his five hits and three RBI. Max Hubka had four hits with two double and three RBI, Brady Beckman added a home run and Chris Wahl was 2-2.
Zane Cascini got the victory for NWU going 5 2/3 innings and striking out six. He did give up 11 hits and eight runs.
For Concordia, Nate Schmoll was 3-6 with a grand slam to lead the Bulldogs.
NWU will continue its opening weekend on Friday (March 5) when they host Buena Vista University in a doubleheader beginning at 5 pm at Sherman Field.
