Cory Hilgenkamp and Josh Ostrom both had complete game victories allowing Bethany College (Kan.) just one run and four total hits and Nebraska Wesleyan University picked up a doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon at NWU Field in Lincoln, Neb. NWU won game one, 3-1, then came back for a 2-0 victory in the second game.
The two victories cap off a successful opening week for the Prairie Wolves as they improve to 4-1 on the season.
In the opening game, Hilgenkamp allowed two hits and struck out four to pick up his first win of the season. He also was the top offensive threat for NWU, going 2-3 with two doubles.
The Prairie Wolves scored one run in the bottom of the second as Brady Beckman drove in Hilgenkamp. The added two more in the fifith as Bryon Janata scored from first on a throwing error, and Andy McGowan had an RBI double.
Ostrom was also very effective in his first career start. The freshman from Fremont, threw a complete game two-hit shutout, striking out four and walking none. He retired 13 batters in a row until a seventh inning error.
NWU scored two runs in the bottom of the second, as Dan Beckmann drove in Chris Wahl, and Janata added a sacrifice fly to score Jeremy Peters. The Prairie Wolves did not get a hit after the second inning.
The Prairie Wolves are now scheduled to travel to York, Neb., on Tuesday (Mar. 10) to take on York College in a doubleheader starting at 3 pm.
