Baseball Picks Up a Pair of Dramatic Victories

Bryon Janata hit a single to score Derrick Pentico in the bottom of the seven as Nebraska Wesleyan rallied from two down to get a 7-6 victory over Dakota Wesleyan University Saturday (Mar. 21) as the Prairie Wolves swept the Tigers in the Great Plains Athletic Conference opener for NWU. Max Hubka hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give NWU a 7-4 win in the first game.

Nebraska Wesleyan improves to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the GPAC, to sit on top of the league standings.

The second game looked in doubt as DWU hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to put the Tigers up 6-4. The Prairie Wolves refused to give up as they put on a fierce rally.

Andy McGowan started the scoring with a solo home run to left field. Cory Hilgenkamp then doubled to right center with they tying run. Hubka then doubled to center to drive in pinch-runner Dan Lowe to tie the game. Janata then hit a single to right field and the runner held up at third, until the right fielder misplayed the ball to allow the pinch runner Pentico to score the winning run.

Griffin DePriest led the NWU offense going 3-3 at the plate. Chris Wahl got the victory to improve to 2-1. He struck out seven to get the complete game victory.

In game one, the score was tied 4-4 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning. McGowan and Corey Petersen had singles before Hubka had the monstrous home run to left centerfield for the win.

DWU jumped ahead 2-0 early as Colin Hacker hit the first of two home runs on the day.

NWU rallied behind a strong offensive performance from Hubka and Cory Hilgenkamp. Hilgenkamp was 3-4 with a double and Hubka was 3-4 with five RBI.

Zane Cascini got the complete game victory allowing six hits and four runs while striking out three.

NWU will be right back in action on Sunday (March 22) when they host Briar Cliff University at 1 pm.
