Hilgenkamp Leads NWU to Win Over Briar Cliff

Cory Hilgenkamp hit three home runs on the day and struck out 12 in game two to lead Nebraska Wesleyan to a 10-6 victory over Briar Cliff University on Sunday afternoon (March 22) at Nebraska Wesleyan Field in Lincoln, Neb. Briar Cliff won the first game, 19-8, despite six home runs from the Prairie Wolves.

The two teams combined for 12 home runs in the doubleheader and had 51 hits in the two games.

Hilgenkamp had a huge day for NWU going 2-4 with a home run in the second game. He also was the starting pitcher where he got the complete game victory with 12 strikeouts. In game one, he was 3-4 with a pair of home runs.

Corey Petersen also hit three home runs in the doubleheader with two in game one and another in the second game. Petersen was 2-3 in both games and added a triple in the second game.

Briar Cliff rolled past NWU in the opener, scoring at least two runs in every inning except the fourth. They knocked NWU starter Owen Schmidt out after just 1+ innings of work.

The Prairie Wolves survived game two as Hilgenkamp struck out the final batter with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate.

NWU improves to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the GPAC. The Prairie Wolves travel to Yankton, S.D., next Saturday (Mar. 28) to face Mount Marty in a GPAC doubleheader.
