Wolves Split Twinbill With Concordia

April 7, 2009

Nebraska Wesleyan battled the fierce wind on Saturday to pick up a 9-5 victory over Concordia University in game one of a Great Plains Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at NWU Field in Lincoln. Concordia bounced back to win game two, 4-2, to split the doubleheader.

NWU now stands at 17-5 overall and 9-3 in the GPAC to stay in first place in the league standings.

Max Hubka, Tyler Stephenson and Griffin DePriest all had two hits apiece for NWU in the opening game as the Prairie Wolves jumped out to an early 6-1 lead after two innings. The Bulldogs pulled within 6-5 before NWU answered with three runs in the sixth inning.

Hubka had a double and three RBI, while Stephenson added a double.

Josh Ostrom got the complete game victory for NWU allowing three earned runs on eight hits while striking out two.

In the second game, NWU had a chance to rally in the seventh inning but a double play ended the game. With the bases loaded and one out, DePriest grounded back to the pitcher who got the force at home plate. The catcher then threw to first base but the ball hit DePriest and the home umpire called him out for running out of the base line.

Ostrom and DePriest both had two hits to lead the NWU offense. Owen Schmidt took the loss on the mound for NWU allowing three earned runs in 5+ innings.
