Zane Cascini threw a complete game one-hitter to lead Nebraska Wesleyan to a 3-1 victory over Morningside College in game one of a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon (Apr. 10) in Sioux City, Iowa. The Prairie Wolves also took game two of the twinbill, 7-5.
The sweep over the Mustangs moves NWU to 20-6 overall and 11-3 in the GPAC. NWU now leads the league standings by two games.
Cory Hilgenkamp had an RBI single in the fourth to put NWU up 1-0 in game one. After an error in the bottom of the fourth, pinch-hitter Mike McBride hit an RBI single for Morningside to tie the game at 1-1. That would be the only hit of the game for the Mustangs.
Tyler Stephenson hit an RBI single in the top of the fifth and Bryon Janata drove in Stephenson in the seventh with a double to give NWU the 3-1 victory.
Cascini continues his solid performance on the mound as he won a battle of the top two pitchers in the GPAC. Although his consecutive scoreless innings streak was snapped at 19 innings, it was the third straight game that Cascini has not allowed an earned run. He improves to 5-1 on the season and gave Morningside ace Wade Morrison his second loss of the year.
NWU scored two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to jump out to a 5-0 lead in game two. Max Hubka had an RBI double and NWU took advantage of an error to score in the third. In the fourth Jeremy Peters drove in Stephenson with a sacrifice, and two more runs scored on an error.
The Prairie Wolves did allow three runs in the bottom of the seventh as the Mustangs got three straight bloop hits.
Chris Wahl pitched a complete game allowing five runs and nine hits to improve to 4-2.
Stephenson was the only NWU player with two hits as he went 2-3 with a run.
Nebraska Wesleyan will look to extend their lead in the league standings as they play at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa on Saturday afternoon.
