Zane Cascini threw his fourth straight complete game without allowing an earned run as he helped lead Nebraska Wesleyan University to a 5-1 victory over Midland Lutheran College in Great Plains Athletic Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon (Apr. 19) in Lincoln, Neb. Midland Lutheran rolled past NWU, 16-6, in the second game of the twinbill.
Nebraska Wesleyan now holds just a one-game lead in the GPAC standings over Mount Marty. The Prairie Wolves are now 22-8 overall and 13-5 in the GPAC, while Midland Lutheran is 18-25, 9-9.
Cascini (6-1) scattered five hits and struck out four in the victory in game one. The lone run of the game came in the second inning after an error put a runner at first. He was sacrificed over, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly.
NWU scored two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings and added another run in the sixth. Corey Petersen, Cory Hilgenkamp and Jeremy Peters all had RBI singles for the Prairie Wolves.
Peters and Hilgenkamp led NWU at the plate going 2-3 with an RBI. The Prairie Wolves did not have an extra base hit.
Game two was not so good for the Prairie Wolves as Midland Lutheran scored at least one run in every inning and piled up 14 hits. Four errors also cost NWU.
Nebraska Wesleyan rallied back to take a 5-4 lead heading into the fourth inning, but the Warriors exploded for four in the fifth and six in the fifth to run away with the game.
Chris Wahl took the loss allowing 10 hits and five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Josh Ostrom led NWU at the plate going 2-4 with three RBI.
Nebraska Wesleyan will hope to bounce back tomorrow (Apr. 20) when they host Northwestern College at 1:45 pm.
