Petersen's Big Offensive Day Leads NWU to Sweep

Corey Petersen went 4-6 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI in a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep for Nebraska Wesleyan over Northwestern College on Monday afternoon (Apr. 20) in Lincoln, Neb. The Prairie Wolves won game one, 7-3, then used the 10-run rule to defeat the Red Raiders, 13-3 in the second game.

The sweep gives NWU a 3-1 record for the weekend marking the fifth straight GPAC weekend that the Prairie Wolves have won three out of four games. NWU improves to 24-8 overall and 15-5 in the GPAC to remain atop the league standings with one week to play.

Petersen broke open game one with a 2-run double in the bottom of the third inning to put NWU up 5-1 after three innings. He then hit a 2-run home run to right field in the fifth to help NWU seal the win.

Tyler Stephenson also had two hits in game one for NWU and Cory Hilgenkamp added two RBI. Hilgenkamp also got the complete game victory on the mound as he made his first start in three weeks. He allowed three earned runs and seven hits to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Northwestern jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning of game two, but the Prairie Wolves answered with three runs in the second inning. Petersen and Chris Wahl both had RBI doubles in the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Max Hubka had an RBI single and Brady Beckman drove in two runs with a single down the left field line.

The Prairie Wolves then exploded for seven runs on five hits in the sixth inning to end the game due to the run rule. Hilgenkamp had a 2-run single, Petersen had an RBI single, Beckman drove in two with a single, Wahl had another RBI single and Stephenson ended the game with an infield hit to drive in a run.

Six different Prairie Wolves had two hits as NWU pounded out 13 hits in game two. Beckman was 2-4 with four RBI and Wahl, Petersen and Hilgenkamp each had 2 RBI going 2-3.

Josh Ostrom remained perfect on the mound as he improved to 6-0 with the complete game victory. He allowed seven hits and two earned runs while striking out three.

Nebraska Wesleyan will close out the regular season this weekend when they travel to Dana College on Friday and host GPAC rival Doane College for Senior Day on Saturday.

The Prairie Wolves will attempt to win the conference regular season championship and earn an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament.
