Five members of the Nebraska Wesleyan University baseball team were named to the 2008 All-Independent baseball team that was announced Wednesday (May 29). NWU sophomore pitcher Zane Cascini was named to the AD3I First-Team. Outfielder Andy McGowan, designated hitter John Rust and first baseman Corey Petersen all were named to the Second-Team. Jared Meays was named to the Third-Team.
Nebraska Wesleyan sophomore pitcher Zane Cascini was named to the NAIA Region III All-Region Baseball Team that was announced Monday (May 12). Cascini was one of four pitchers that was selected for the All-Region team.
Nebraska Wesleyan University senior pitcher Tom Hranac was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team that was announced on Thursday (May 8). Hranac was voted to the District 7 Second-Team in the college division. This is the second straight season that Hranac received Academic All-District Second-Team recognition.
Nine members of the Nebraska Wesleyan University baseball team were named to the 2008 Great Plains Athletic Conference Baseball All-Conference team that was announced Monday (May 5). NWU sophomore pitcher Zane Cascini was named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Pitcher-of-the-Year. Cascini was joined by designated hitter John Rust on the All-GPAC First Team. Outfielders Andy McGowan and Jared Meays were named All-GPAC Second Team, while Steve Schaffer, Andy Nealon, Corey Petersen, Chris Wahl and Jon Scholz received honorable mention All-GPAC. In addition, Jared Meays was named to the GPAC Gold Glove Team as the right fielder.
The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team fell back into a tie for sixth place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings after going 1-3 over the weekend in GPAC action. NWU started the weekend off right defeating GPAC leader Northwestern College, 8-5, but then dropped three in a row. Northwestern took game two on Saturday, 5-1, then Midland Lutheran College swept the Prairie Wolves on Sunday afternoon in Fremont, winning game one, 8-3, and game two, 2-1.
Corey Petersen hit a single up the middle to drive in Bryon Janata in the bottom of the 10th inning as Nebraska Wesleyan pulled out a 2-1 victory over Morningside College in game one of a GPAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon (April 13) at NWU Field in Lincoln, Neb. The Mustangs took game two of the doubleheader, 8-3.
Nebraska Wesleyan took advantage of four straight hit batters in the bottom of the seventh inning to score four runs and rally back to earn a 6-4 victory over Doane College in a 9-inning nonconference game on Wednesday (April 9) at NWU Field in Lincoln, Neb.
Nebraska Wesleyan University athletes swept the Association of Division III Independent's (AD3I) weekly awards for the week of March 31-April 6. John Rust was named the baseball Player-of-the-Week, while Klancy Nixon was the softball Player-of-the-Week. In addition, both Rust and Nixon were also named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Players-of-the-Week. Rust also was named the NAIA Region III Player-of-the-Week.
John Rust hit three home runs on the day including two in game two to lead Nebraska Wesleyan University to a 14-4 victory over Hastings College on Sunday afternoon at NWU Field in Lincoln, Neb. Hastings rallied from seven runs down to win the first game, 12-11. Rust also homered on Saturday night as NWU swept past Concordia University, 6-1, and 9-3.
The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team ended its three game losing streak by sweeping a doubleheader against Peru State College on Tuesday (Apr. 1) in Peru, Neb. NWU held off the Bobcats, 6-5, in game one then rolled to a 12-1 victory in the nightcap. The Prairie Wolves improve to 10-11 overall.

Nebraska Wesleyan opened the Great Plains Athletic Conference portion of the 2008 baseball schedule last weekend at NWU Field in Lincoln, Neb. The Prairie Wolves swept the doubleheader on Friday (Mar. 21) against Mount Marty College, but dropped both games of the twinbill against the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday (Mar. 22).
