Buena Vista took both games from Nebraska Wesleyan in the home opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 12) at NWU Field in Lincoln. BVU won game one, 9-0, then took the second game 6-3.
The Beavers (5-1) pitching staff controlled the Prairie Wolves (2-3) bats in the opening game. Starting pitcher Luke Probasco threw seven innings allowing just one hit with eight strikeouts. Relief pitcher Michael Dirkx had four strikeouts in two innings at the Prairie Wolves struck out 12 times in game one.
NWU starter Ryan Dolezal went the first 5 1/3 for the Prairie Wolves allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts. He was replaced in the sixth inning after a collision with catcher Tanner Lewis.
The game was scoreless for the first four innings then BVU scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings with four in the seventh.
NWU managed just three hits in the opening game.
In the second game, the Beavers scored a run in each of the first two innings. NWU then rallied to score two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Beau Kelly and Matt Honerman both had RBI singles for the Prairie Wolves.
The tie didn't last long as BVU scored three runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead and they would not trail again. Ryan Scheetz had a two-run single for the big hit of the inning.
NWU did score one run in the bottom of the eighth to get back within two, but the Beavers responded with another insurance run in the ninth.
Justin Van Dyke took the loss on the mound for NWU going 4 2/3 innings allowing five earned runs and eight hits.
Beau Kelly and Matt Honerman were both 2-4 with an RBI to lead the NWU offense.
The Prairie Wolves will host Peru State for one 9-inning game on Sunday at 1 pm.
