Alumni Runners Persevere from Market to Market

NWU Alumni Runners Participate in Market to Market RunHow does an 84-mile run through snow from Omaha’s Old Market to Lincoln’s Haymarket sound? To 1,120 runners including more than 14 NWU alumni, it sounded like fun.

They ran the second Market to Market Relay on October 10. Seven-member teams split 21 four-mile stages over trails, roads and highways.

When training began, alumni pictured a crisp fall day. Instead, Ashley Styskal, Amber Brandenburger, Michelle Niewohner, Kurt Nielsen, Derek Carson, Chris Baum and Ted Bulling saw snow, wind and temperatures in the 20s. But turning back wasn’t an option.

Almost 11 chilly hours later, Nielsen finished in the Haymarket. While not among the elite teams, the Prairie Wolves won the race’s academic division and placed 26th out of 160 overall.

There were other Prairie Wolves on the road. Alumni Ron Moran, John Ross, Mike Wohlers, Greg Hatten, Craig Kenworthy, Gary Wasserman and John Lefever finished ninth on a team they named “Twitching Road Kill.” Many alumni ran on other teams as well.
