From the President

President Ohles in Front of Old MainDear Alumni and Friends,

With this issue of Archways magazine we turn to reflections on the third and final element of Nebraska Wesleyan’s strategic plan, The Archways Plan 2012. That third element is Resources for the Work of the University.

In previous issues we’ve shown the accomplishments of our students and we’ve shown our commitment to thoughtful planning. Now we show the significance of two vital resources: good people (faculty, staff, volunteers) and sufficient funds.

Do we have good people? Yes. Do they have optimal settings, materials, equipment, and other resources for their work? Not always. Can I assure you that they’re compensated sufficiently, considering their professional preparation and dedication to this important work? Not yet.

Teamwork is a key to bringing enough revenue to Nebraska Wesleyan to pay our professors what they deserve and to address our other resource challenges.

Our faculty salaries are a particular concern for me. Even when we compare salaries to other colleges and universities in Nebraska, lately we’ve not always kept up. That’s inconsistent with our long-term goals for fulfilling the mission of Nebraska Wesleyan University.

What can be done about this situation? You’ll see all through this issue references to the importance of teamwork. Teamwork is a key to bringing enough revenue to Nebraska Wesleyan to pay our professors what they deserve and to address our other resource challenges.

Recently the Board of Governors resolved that annual contributions to Nebraska Wesleyan should double within the next five years. Then they committed to double their own contributions, as an example for everyone else, and not in five years but immediately. Fewer than 90 days after making that commitment, they had done it. Now that’s teamwork!

I view everyone who reads Archways as a member of the Nebraska Wesleyan team. Do you think of yourself that way? I hope so.

Just as much, I hope you’ll do now what all good team members do. Contribute your own effort (and resources) to sustaining all that’s excellent about Nebraska Wesleyan University. For doing that, you’ll have my sincere thanks and the gratitude of our fine students.
