Extracurricular Activities
There are many avenues for addressing women’s issues
within the University community. The President’s Commission on Women’s Issues allows
students, faculty and administrators to engage in meaningful
dialogue and sponsor campus events involving the issues of
gender and sexual orientation.
Women’s Resource Center
The Women’s Resource Center, located in the Center for Student Involvement, works in conjunction with the Gender
Studies program to promote women’s issues throughout
the campus. The Center brings speakers to campus, conducts
educational programs within the residence halls, offers referrals
for counseling and personal services and provides information
about issues ranging from eating disorders to seeking a protection
order. The Center is staffed mostly by student volunteers,
but paid positions are also available.
Conferences
The annual conference of the National Women’s
Studies Association offers students the opportunity to present
research papers, participate in panel discussions and interact
with other students across the nation. Numerous Wesleyan students
also attend the annual No Limits Conference at the University
of Nebraska-Lincoln; several have presented academic and creative
papers at the conference.
Practicums and Individual Projects
Practicums are supervised, experiential learning
opportunities within an agency that addresses women’s
concerns. Recent Wesleyan students have completed practicums
in a variety of organizations, including:
- Commission on the Status of Women
- Fresh Start Home
- Friendship Home
- Lincoln Action Program
- Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays
- Planned Parenthood
- Rape/Spouse Abuse Crisis Center
Students also have the opportunity to conduct
individual projects supervised by a faculty member. Current
and former students have researched specific gender issues,
mentored fellow women’s studies students, completed
in-depth readings on a topic of interest and prepared presentations
for women’s studies conferences. |
