Personal Attention
The Department of English offers small classes—intermediate (100-level) courses usually enroll 12-20 students, and upper-level (200-level) courses rarely exceed 15 students. A low student-faculty ratio gives English majors a lot of personal attention from their professors
.

Student Publications and Activities
English majors and minors expand their abilities by working on the student newspaper (Reveille), or the campus literary magazine (Flintlock).

English majors and minors with strong academic records can join the NWU chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honorary society, which sponsors activities on and off campus.

Students are also encouraged to give presentations on their research projects at regional and national conferences.

Lectures and Readings
The department regularly sponsors visits from noted writers who provide rich learning experiences for students.

The Kenneth R. Holder Lecture brings a distinguished scholar in the field of composition, linguistics or English education to campus each spring. The Visiting Writer Series brings several fiction writers and poets to campus throughout the year.

The Camacho Prize is presented to a student for outstanding humorous writing, and the Boatwright Prizes are presented to students for both poetry and prose published in the Flintlock. Winners of these student writing prizes are invited to give public readings of their work when the prizes are announced.

Internships and Studying Abroad
Internships place English majors in positions using their writing skills. In alternate years, students have the opportunity to travel to England for a Shakespeare Studies in Britain class offered in partnership with St. Mary's College of Maryland. They study Shakespeare at Stratford and attend a play in the restored Globe Theatre in London.

Many English students participate in an international education program for a semester or a year. English students who are pursuing secondary education certification have also done their student-teaching abroad.
