In this film, viewers meet DAM, a hip hop group led by Tamer Nafas; three young women who perform to a rousing applause but objection from family members and neighbors; and PR, an emerging trio from Gaza. They see rap as a way to channel anger. The camera observes them composing and performing, going to gigs, and walking the streets of Tel Aviv and Gaza. Israel's military presence is extensive.

This 2007 Austrian film is a true story of the largest counterfeiting operation in history, set up by the Nazis in 1936. Sally Sorowitsch is the kind of counterfeiters. He lives a mischievous life of cards, booze, and women in Berlin during the Nazi era. Suddenly his luck runs dry when arrested by Superintendent Friedrich Herzog.

This 2008 Japanese film is about Daigo Kobayashi who is a devoted cellist in an orchestra that has just been dissolved and now finds himself without a job. Daigo decides to move back to his hometown with his wife to look for work and start over. He answers a classified ad titled "Departures" thinking it is an advertisement for a travel agency only to discover that the job is actually for a "Nokanshi" or "encoffineer," a funeral professional who prepared deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life. While his wife and others despise the job, Daigo takes a certain pride in his work and begins to perfect the art of "Nokanshi" acting as a gentle gatekeeper between life and death.

This 2008 Swedish film is about Oskar, a bullied 12-year-old who dreams of revenge. He falls in love with Eli, a peculiar girl. She can't stand the sun or food and to come into a room she needs to be invited. Eli gives Oskar the strength to hit back but when he realizes that Eli needs to drink other people's blood to live, he's faced with a choice. How much can love forgive?

This 2006 Chinese film is set on the eve of the Chong Yang Festival. The Emperor returns unexpectedly with his second son, Prince Jai. His pretext is to celebrate the holiday with his family, but given the chilled relations between the Emperor and the ailing Empress, this seems disingenuous. For many years, the Empress and Crown Prince Wan, her stepson, have had an illicit liaison. Feeling trapped, Prince Wan dreams of escaping the palace with his secret love Chan.

This 2008 French film is about teacher Francois Marin and his colleagues who are preparing for another school year at a racially mixed inner-city high school in Paris. The teachers talk to each other about their prospective students, both good and bad. The teachers collectively want to inspire their students, but each teacher is an individual who will do things in his or her own way to achieve the results they desire.

All films:

  • are FREE and open to the public and subtitled in English
  • will have a discussion session following each showing
  • will be shown in Olin A Lecture Hall within the Olin Hall of Sciences located at 51st Street and Saint Paul Avenue on the Nebraska Wesleyan University campus
