Alumni Association > Executive Council

Serving the University and Our Alumni
The purpose of the Wesleyan Alumni Association is to assist Nebraska Wesleyan in fulfilling the University’s mission and to be a vehicle for each alumnus to continue to share in the life of the University. Our primary activities include:

  • Promoting active alumni participation and involvement through on-campus and regional programs;
  • Communicating and interpreting the University’s mission, plans and programs;
  • Identifying and encouraging the enrollment of a highly qualified and diverse student population;
  • Recognizing the University’s alumni who are distinguished by their loyalty, professional achievement and community service;
  • Assisting both students and alumni of the University in career planning, placement and transitions;
  • Supporting a relationship between the Association and current Wesleyan students through Wesleyan Alumni Student Association (WASA);
  • Assisting in obtaining philanthropic support from alumni; and
  • In cooperation with the Alumni Office, to be self-sustaining and self-perpetuating with regard to the Association’s leadership, role, and function.

Alumni Association Leadership
The Nebraska Wesleyan Alumni Association is managed by the Alumni Executive Council (AEC). The AEC consists of the University’s Director of Alumni and Special Programs; the elected officers of the Association, which include a president-elect, president, past president and six vice presidents; 7-16 decade representatives; the student president of the Wesleyan Alumni Student Association; and the presidents of regional clubs.

Alumni Council Qualifications
Members of the AEC are appointed based on commitment to Nebraska Wesleyan and to the goals of the Alumni Association, distinguished personal and vocational achievement and financial support or volunteer service to the University. Other desired qualifications include the ability to motivate individual members and committees; proven leadership in other organizations, associations, or clubs; the ability to set and achieve goals and objectives; and dedication to a team endeavor. All Nebraska Wesleyan University graduates or former students who earned 12 or more credits in good standing are eligible for consideration for the AEC.

Alumni Council Responsibilities
Each AEC member serves a two-year term and is eligible for re-appointment for up to three consecutive terms. In accepting an AEC appointment, an individual agrees to fulfill the responsibilities of Council membership. These include but are not limited to:

  • Attending quarterly AEC meetings. Meetings include agenda items such as presentations on general University programs, committee reports, team building activities, strategic planning and decision making, etc.
  • Being informed about the Alumni Association's and the University's mission, services, priorities, and programs. Keeping up-to-date on developments in the field of higher education and alumni affairs.
  • Serving actively on at least one Alumni Association committee. This includes reviewing agendas and supporting materials prior to AEC and committee meetings, attending meetings, asking questions, taking responsibility and following through on assignments.
  • Serving as an ambassador for Nebraska Wesleyan University in his/her community.
  • Developing and assisting in implementing an annual list of goals and strategies to be accomplished by the AEC and/or the various Alumni Association committees.
  • Suggesting possible nominees to the AEC who can make significant contributions to the work of the organization, its committees, and the University.
  • Developing and administering such policies and procedures as necessary to maintain the Association.

Measures of Success
Success of the AEC and its members is measured through a variety of a activities such as recruitment of new alumni volunteers; active, growing committees; growing regional programs and increased recognition in members’ workplace and community; positive impact on alumni participation, such as increased donations to the Alumni fund, attendance at events, student recruitment and career placement initiatives; realization of committee goals within original timeframes and budgets.

The Alumni Executive Council was reinstated in January 2002. Since then, the AEC has overseen implementation of a variety of successful projects such as a set of regional club guidelines and a pilot organization in Omaha; Wesleyan Weekend, the combined reunion/homecoming event; annual holiday events for Lincoln and Omaha area alumni; an alumni survey administered in June 2002; a review of alumni award categories and selection of annual recipients and the implementation of an online community in summer 2005.

What You Receive in Return
As a member of the Alumni Executive Council, you will receive tremendous personal and professional satisfaction from involvement with your alma mater and a dedicated group of fellow alumni; promoting the University where you spent some of your most rewarding years; and from increasing the value of your degree through greater awareness of Wesleyan in your community. You will be recognized in Archways magazine, the NWU website and other relevant venues as much as possible.
